Minnesota is home to a true freshwater giant , the lake sturgeon, our largest native fish. These prehistoric fish can grow to over 100 pounds and live well beyond a century. Join Little Wilderness for a unique chance to encounter one of these ancient creatures in the wild. We’ll be heading to the St. Croix River, one of the premier sturgeon fisheries in the state. With guidance from a licensed captain and your Little Wilderness coordinator, participants will learn about the river, the species, and the skills required to responsibly catch and release these legendary fish.
Meeting Location: Bayport Public Access
Trip Focus: Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing (with possible catfish opportunities)
Led By: Licensed fishing captain and Little Wilderness coordinator
What’s Included: All fishing gear, bait, and instruction provided
We'll begin the day with a brief safety and equipment overview. Parents or guardians will need to sign a waiver at check-in. On the water, our captain will demonstrate how to catch baitfish like shad, a key food source for sturgeon, before heading to the first fishing spot. If conditions are right, every participant may have the chance to battle one of these massive fish.
